The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is probably the third time that I’ve read this book.
I originally picked it up in high school when the Tampa Tribune published a list of books that had been banned from reading lists in schools and it was on it. I have to admit that it didn’t mean to me then what it means to me now. It is a truly frightening book, more than 1984 and Brave New World combined. It’s feminist literature at it’s best, but that definitely doesn’t mean that you have to consider yourself a feminist to read it. The scariest part about it is as the author tells us in the prologue is that all the conditions imposed upon women in the book have actually happened somewhere, sometime. It’s a terrible and frightening thought and on my more morbid days I wonder if this is where we are going as a society….
What a sunshine-y review. :)
